Shooting Using S-log

For this assignment, I went outside to get some fresh air and practice shooting in S-Log. Like in assignment 3.2, I captured both a close-up and a medium shot of someone—this time recording motion picture instead of stills.

Shooting in S-Log was a valuable learning experience. It allowed me to retain more detail in both the highlights and shadows, which is essential for color grading. I paid close attention to my exposure settings to avoid losing important image data, since log footage looks flat out of the camera but contains a lot of information.

I used natural outdoor lighting, which helped me see how S-Log manages contrast and color. I set my white balance manually and used exposure tools like zebras and false color to ensure my subject was properly exposed. Getting the exposure right was critical, as improper exposure makes color grading more difficult.

Framing was also an important part of the process. I made sure the close-up captured facial detail and emotion, while the medium shot provided environmental context. Both shots were steady and well-composed, giving the log footage a strong base for grading.

Overall, this assignment deepened my understanding of S-Log and its potential. It challenged me to be more deliberate with my settings and boosted my confidence in using log profiles for shoots where I want greater control in post-production.
